Phil Torrone: The multitasking cab driver

September 28th, 2007
Sitting in the back of a taxi coming from JFK to Manhattan, the driver is screaming at someone on his smartphone – swerving and weaving all over the place. He even started texting someone. For the first time in a long time I buckle up after narrowly avoiding another cab. I was on my way back from a conference about electronics, so why not fix try and fix this? I reached in to my bag of gadgets and activated the “wave bubble” - a low power, low range radio frequency jammer - it’s an art project, at least that’s what they tell me. In one press of the button the call ended, the driver slowed down. It’s calm again, he says hi to me. We talk about sports and weather.

I had a Palm Treo 650, it was the latest member of a long line Palm devices in the Carroll household since 1999. The Treo allowed me to post a picture and a blog post from San Francisco airport, unfortunately it managed to also trash my address book and calendar with constantly inserting duplicate entries any time I synced to my computer and crashing after every meal. I ended up throwing it out of a third story window without hitting anyone and moving to a Nokia device instead.
